Some may not understand the desire to run while on vacation, but to those who love lacing up their running shoes and hitting the pavement—or in the island’s case, the sand—it could be the highlight of their trip. We’ve collected a list of the upcoming races and charitable runs that will be happening on Hilton Head Island.  

Summer

Palmetto Dunes Turtle Trot 5K

The Palmetto Dunes Turtle Trot 5K has become a vacation tradition for many. Participants of all ages may run or walk this course consisting of hard, flat sand, and enjoy the beautiful views of the island’s waterline. A t-shirt is included with registration, and in the event that the run is canceled due to inclement weather, participants will still receive their t-shirt and know that their registration fee will be going toward a good cause. This run helps Palmetto Dunes Cares, a charitable giving initiative that focuses on various areas of the community such as arts and culture, education, the environment, and more. Beach Bum Triathlon & Duathlon

In its 21st year, the Beach Bum Triathlon and Duathlon, produced by the Hilton Head Running Company and Go Tri Sports, is all about having some fun in the sun with some added challenge and competition. Participants can either choose the Triathlon (500-meter swim in the ocean, a 6-mile beach bike ride, and a 3-mile run along the beach) or the Duathlon (1.5-mile run along the beach, a 6-mile beach bike ride, and then another 3-mile run on the beach). Those choosing the Triathlon can either compete individually or in a team. The awards ceremony will take place immediately after the race is completed, along with post-race refreshments at the Coligny Beach access area. For more information and FAQs, click here.

Firecracker 5K

Celebrate Independence Day at the annual Hilton Head Firecracker 5K! This family-friendly race and walk is Beaufort County’s oldest and largest race. Beginning at 9:00am, there will be three runs for kids that will be separated by age and distance. After the run, join in on the celebration at the post-race party and barbecue. Participants are welcome to enjoy delicious pizza and two complimentary beers or hard seltzer for those that are 21+. Have a blast with games for kids, the Patriotic costume contest, and a DJ on site. Can’t be there the day of? There’s a virtual run available!

USA 5K

Start your holiday with a morning run (or walk) on the beach! All ages and skill levels are invited to the annual USA 5K, produced by the Hilton Head Running Company and benefiting the Hilton Head Island Sea Turtle Patrol. All participants receive a festive t-shirt and finishers medal. This run will be held entirely on the beach at low tide, so expect hard, flat sand and plenty of room to run or walk.

Arrive ready to run in your best red, white, and blue! Strollers are welcome.

Fall/Winter

8th Annual Sandalwood Run for Hunger

All are invited to run or walk either the 5K or 10K course which consists of roads, trails, and beach. This annual event is organized by and benefits the Sandalwood Community Food Pantry, with the help of the community and local business sponsors. Make sure to register before October 1st to guarantee getting a t-shirt! Medals will be presented to the top male and female finishers, as well as the top three finishers in each age category. And back by popular demand, the awards will go to the top three dogs as well!

Hilton Head Marathon, Half Marathon, & 5K

The Hilton Head Marathon is USATF certified and is a Boston Marathon qualifier. Starting and finishing in Jarvis Creek Park, the courses will take you through the beautiful island scenery and over the Cross Island Bridge. Participants of all three races will receive race swag, a finisher medal, as well as two complimentary Island Brand beers for those ages 21 and over. Once the races are finished, join in on the post-race party in Jarvis Creek Park, where there will be great music, food, drinks, and a craft beer garden.
