Just steps from Coligny Beach and tucked inside the popular shopping and gathering center, Coligny Plaza, you’ll find a Hilton Head Island favorite where tropical island vibes meet Carolina flavor. With its bamboo-covered walls, laid-back atmosphere, live music, and a menu filled with everything from fresh seafood to burgers and tacos, Big Bamboo Cafe is the kind of place where you can stop in for a meal and end up staying for the music. If you’re looking for a casual lunch or dinner spot or even the perfect place for happy hour with friends, this local favorite has something for everyone.
The Space
From the moment you step into Big Bamboo, you’ll feel like you’ve traded the Carolina coast for the South Pacific. Bamboo, tropical decor, and an easygoing island vibe set the scene, while the restaurant’s upstairs location in Coligny Plaza puts you just a short walk from the beach. This restaurant has a feel like none other on the island, and the first word we’d use to describe it would just be outright, “fun!”
With plenty of seating for groups of all sizes, you might even try to score a table outside on their deck to enjoy the island breeze and live music if you’re lucky. The atmosphere is casual and lively, making it a great place to unwind after a day in the sun or to settle in for an evening of food, drinks, and entertainment with friends. Plus, Big Bamboo is a family-friendly spot with a kids’ menu, so the whole crew can find something they’ll enjoy!

The Menu
Come hungry, because Big Bamboo’s menu covers a little bit of everything. Seafood lovers can dig into Lowcountry favorites like shrimp, while burger fans can choose from a selection of signature creations. You’ll also find tacos, salads, sandwiches, and plenty of delicious sharable plates and appetizers.
Looking for something to snack on while waiting on entrees? The Ahi Tuna Wontons and Coconut Shrimp are two popular choices, while the menu also features classic choices like Bar Nachos, Fried Calamari, and a selection of soups and salads if everyone wants their own starter.
And don’t forget about the drinks! Big Bamboo offers an extensive selection of craft beers from around the Carolinas, along with tropical-inspired cocktails and crowd-favorite margaritas. If you’re looking to make the most of your visit, stop by during happy hour for food and drink specials. At the time this guide was written, their current happy hour runs daily from 4-6pm on the deck and in the bar, making it easy to grab a seat and enjoy some drinks and bites on island time.
Just a note: Big Bamboo Cafe is closed on Sundays.

The Music
One of the biggest parts of the Big Bamboo experience is the live music. The restaurant regularly welcomes local musicians to its deck, creating the perfect soundtrack for an afternoon or evening on Hilton Head Island. During the summer, you can often catch live entertainment out on the deck throughout the week, with musicians bringing everything from laid-back island tunes to upbeat favorites to the stage.
Before you visit, check Big Bamboo’s current music calendar to see who’s playing during your stay. You might just discover your new favorite island hangout!
