Local Spotlight: Wheelz of Hilton Head

It’s no secret that Hilton Head Island is meant to be explored by bicycle. And yet, so many people miss out on this amazing experience. Sure, there may be obstacles that prevent some travelers from being able to ride bikes as a group, but if you are able to, we highly suggest reserving rental bikes for at least a few hours—you’ll be hooked instantly! And if not, continue reading to learn more about Wheelz of Hilton Head’s street-legal golf cart rentals!

So why is Hilton Head a biking paradise? The island is constantly praised because of how bicycle friendly it is, and is actually a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community.  There are over 50 miles of interconnected public pathways throughout the island, allowing locals and visitors to navigate the island with ease. The easiest way to get to the beach, go for a quick bite to eat, or see the sunrise or sunset along the beach, biking is must-do activity on Hilton Head Island, and our friends at Wheelz of Hilton Head are the experts!

Let’s Talk Rentals

For an easy rental process, book your rental items online at rentwheelz.com. Not sure what size bike you’ll need or what attachments will fit your group best? The friendly staff at Wheelz will be able to help you decide over the phone or in-store. If you’re only looking to ride for a few hours, the Daylight Bike Rental will be your best option. Longer rentals are based on a 24-hour day, so if you’re wanting to keep your bikes overnight, you’ll need to choose the 24-Hour Bike Rental or longer. All rentals 3-days or longer are eligible for delivery, allowing you to start off your Hilton Head vacation as soon as you arrive to your accommodations.

Pro Tip: As soon as you know you’ll be wanting to rent bikes or a golf cart, make your reservation! During busy months, popular sizes tend to sell out.

Looking to rent a golf cart? Reservations can be made over the phone, or, if there’s availability, you can rent a 4-seater or 6-seater right from the Wheelz location. Regardless, you will have to pick up the golf cart from the Wheelz storefront, so the team can confirm the driver is eligible and go over all safety information and South Carolina laws pertaining to street-legal golf carts.

The Bikes

The best type of bikes to ride in the Lowcountry are beach cruisers, so you won’t find any mountain bikes, road bikes, or anything with gears at Wheelz of Hilton Head. Each cruiser is equipped with an extremely comfortable seat, and baskets may be added to conveniently store your beach bag, souvenirs, or your to-go meal.

There’s a bike or attachment for all ages, from tall frames, to the smallest size, the 16″ with or without training wheels. If your little ones aren’t able to ride along on their own cruiser, attachements such as the Kazoo, a single-speed Trailercycle attachment, or for more secure options, a Honey Bee Child Trailer or Child Seat will do the trick! You might want to wait on a family bike ride until all children are over the age of one-year-old.

Bringing along your furry friend? The Tail Wagon and Bark Ranger will do the trick, allowing Fido to ride in style. For more space, rent a Flatbed Cargo Trailer to make bringing along your beach gear a whole lot easier. Learn more about all available rental attachements on the Wheelz of Hilton Head website.

The Golf Carts

Bikes will always be a popular way of getting around on Hilton Head, but the second-best way hit the streets a couple years ago when Wheelz of Hilton Head first opened. Since then, visitors have enjoyed exploring the south end of the island on street-legal golf carts. There’s no need for a rental car when you can experience island life in the open air! Choose from a 4- or 6-seater gas golf cart, and get ready to cruise through Coligny to your favorite beach tunes–did we mention there’s a built-in bluetooth speaker on every cart?

While driving a golf cart on the island can be a convenient way to get around, there are some limitations to where you can actually go. South Carolina law states that street-legal golf carts can only be driven on roads 35 mph or below. If you’re unfamiliar with the roads on the island, it’s best to stick to the helpful map you’ll be given with your rental, or planning ahead by viewing the digital copy online. Now, the south end isn’t the only area you can drive a Wheelz golf cart! The grand opening of the seasonal Wheelz location at Island Links Resort is May 25th, 2025.
