Top 5 Destinations for a Coastal Romantic Getaway

Everyone has a different idea of what makes a travel destination perfect for a romantic getaway. Many people would choose a place with a glittering skyline of impressive high-rises and endless blocks of award-winning restaurants to have a delicious dinner as a couple. Others would agree that surrounding themselves in the quiet of the mountains with the feeling that they have breathtaking views all to themselves is best for a romantic retreat.

While we would agree with both of those options, we’re on team Coastal Romantic Getaway. Think about it: long walks along the waterline, watching sunrises and sunsets over the sparkling ocean, cruising through the waves side by side watching for dolphins…you just can’t beat it! That’s why we’ve created a list of our favorite coastal destinations that make for perfect week-long or weekend getaways to spend with your special someone.

Charleston, SC

The very definition of “charm” itself, Charleston, South Carolina, has long been a romantic escape for those wanting to explore its cobblestone streets hand in hand with the one they love and to enjoy the feeling of date night every night with an unlimited number of unique eateries to choose from. The views are stunning with its colorful hues looking as though they’ve all been enhanced. While the opportunities to explore the Holy City by foot are seemingly endless, don’t forget to add a carriage ride to the itinerary for that extra bit of fairytale romance.

Kauaʻi, HI

For a tropical oasis that exudes breathtaking natural beauty, head to the Garden Isle, or the island of Kauaʻi. A popular honeymoon destination, this Hawaiian island feels more secluded and offers a vibrant rainforest expanding over its jagged cliffs and beautiful valleys as well as gorgeous beaches to enjoy. Hike together through trails to see waterfalls or snorkel to find colorful tropical fish. For adventure seekers, enjoy an awe-inspiring helicopter ride to see the island by air. And when you’re ready to wind down the evening, enjoy a delicious and authentic meal outside in the island air to watch the stunning sunset.

Newport, RI

With ocean views, Gilded Age mansions, and a quaint historic downtown lined with colonial buildings from the mid-18th century, Newport, Rhode Island, is a dreamy destination for visitors wanting a trip filled with quality time and beautiful memories. Romantic walks along Cliff Walk are highly recommended and will bring you along the eastern shore of the Rhode Island city, allowing you to admire the wildflowers, seashore, and 3.5 miles of mansions like the well-known Marble House, The Breakers, and more. As the Sailing Capital of the World, you must get out on the water for a sunset cruise or sailing lesson.

San Juan Islands, WA

Just off the state of Washington, the San Juan Islands is an archipelago that includes 172 named islands, with popular islands, Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan Islands all having ferry service from the Anacortes Ferry Terminal on the mainland. Whatever island you choose to stay on, you’ll have plenty of idyllic views and outdoor activities to enjoy with your loved one. Other than exploring the different islands, we recommend going kayaking or on a whale-watching cruise. Visit from late fall to late spring and you’ll feel as though you’ll have your island all to yourselves! Winters on the San Juan Islands are pretty mild and rainy; all the better for cozy nights in or at one of the local bistros or cafes.

Fort Lauderdale, FL

If the two of you are looking for a getaway filled with sand, surf, and vibrant nightlife, head to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Located on Florida’s southeastern coast, the city features 24 miles of beaches as well as 165 miles of canals that allow visitors to fully experience the “Venice of America” on a tour or water taxi. There are opportunities to explore the area’s landscape in the beautiful Florida sunshine, just as there are many upscale restaurants to make dinner reservations at. Another reason why Fort Lauderdale is on our list is because it’s a major cruise ship port, and we can’t think of a better romantic getaway than cruising the Caribbean!
