The Harbour Town Lighthouse is an iconic symbol of the island, and it is well worth the time to not only view the beautiful landmark in person but to actually visit the museum located within the lighthouse itself. Enter a curated gift shop of unique gifts, books, and more to purchase your ticket to the museum, and from there, simply climb to the very top of the lighthouse. You’ll not only get the best view of the island but learn about Hilton Head’s history as you ascend as there are exhibits on every floor.
Coastal Discovery Museum

A Smithsonian Affiliate on the historic Honey Horn property, the museum’s main building, the Discovery House, can be found within the oldest building on the property. While admission is free, consider leaving a donation. Inside the Discovery House, you’ll find fascinating exhibits in various rooms that center on the history, culture, and even artistry of Hilton Head and the surrounding area. Kids will love the Kids Zone, and additional tours and a full program of activities and talks are available for an extra fee. And don’t stop just at the Discovery House; the Honey Horn property is meant to be explored from its Marsh Tacky horses to its Butterfly Enclosure, boardwalks, and more.
Gullah Museum of Hilton Head

Dedicated to celebrating and preserving the cultural heritage of the Gullah people, the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head was founded in 2003 by Louise Miller-Cohen. Home to just about 500 artifacts that help show the resilient spirit, traditions, and contributions that the Gullah people made to American culture. Often hosting events, the Gullah Museum welcomes visitors to take a one-hour presentation on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays. The Sandbox Children’s Museum

Looking for a way for your kiddos to have some hands-on learning? The Sandbox is an interactive children’s museum located in Lowcountry Celebration Park (that also has an amazing outdoor play structure, by the way), and is a great opportunity for kids to play, learn, create, and just have some fun in various exhibits that are inspired by Hilton Head, professions, and more! Mostly inside, the Sandbox is a great option to get out of the rain for a few hours. A popular activity for families, we recommend making a reservation as early as you possibly can.

Nestled within the heart of Old Town Bluffton, the Heyward House is the official Welcome Center for the charming and historic town of Bluffton. You’ll definitely want to make this the first stop as you explore Old Town, as there’s a bunch of maps and brochures available that will help plan your day or afternoon. The actual museum highlights the history of the town, and is itself a part of the town’s history as one of eight remaining antebellum homes in Bluffton. Take a walking tour or golf cart tour to better explore Old Town.

This museum will definitely catch your eye since the building itself stands out from the other historic buildings in downtown Beaufort. The Arsenal that was built in 1798 for the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery now houses the museum, and as you walk through the fortification’s golden walls, you’re met with a courtyard and cannons. Inside the museum, you’ll be able to see permanent and rotating exhibits that tell the story of the region starting with the arrival of Native Americans. The Beaufort History Museum is a must-see when you’re in town!
Reconstruction Era National Historical Park Visitor Center

Plan to visit the headquarters and visitor center of Beaufort’s National Historic Landmark District. The center is located in the Old Beaufort Firehouse downtown, and you learn about many of the historic buildings used as offices, hospitals, and more during the Civil War when the United States Military occupied the area. Focusing on the years between 1861 and 1898, visitors can also plan to visit additional preserved Reconstruction sites. One of these is Penn Center, which is further down on this list.

Those interested in military history will want to make a trip to the Parris Island Marine Museum. The 10,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space is full of interesting artifacts pertaining to the Marine’s training center, with additional items and information about the Spanish and French settlements in the region, and about World Wars I and II, Iraq, and more. Visitors will have to show their drivers license, registration, and proof of insurance at the Parris Island gate upon entry.

Found within the, “Frampton House,” a farmhouse built in 1868 by John Frampton after the original plantation was burned down by General Sherman’s troops, is the Lowcountry Visitor’s Center and Museum. Located right off of Highway 95, you might want to make the stop on your way to Hilton Head Island, or on your way home if you’re headed north. Visitors are met with a beautiful, 250-year-old Southern Live Oak Tree swathed in Spanish Moss, and can find a recreated 1900s parlor when they enter the historic home. Also located just off of 95 and in the heart of the small town of Ridgeland, is the Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage. The center in what was the historic Sinclair Service Station, and now offers both permanent and rotating exhibits, programs, and events that allow visitors of all ages to learn more about the Lowcountry. The Morris Center is open to the public and free to visit, making a great stop on your way to the island. There are daily tours available if you want a more in-depth experience, and you can take a look at their current exhibits and programs, here.

Visit the campus of the former, Penn School, one of the nation’s first schools for formerly enslaved people. Located on St Helena Island, this 50-acre historic district contains 25 historic buildings and structures on the island and has two of the four within the Reconstruction Era National Park. Start at the Welcome Center and the York W. Bailey Museum, where you can see the Penn School Collection and Penn School Papers. Visitors can take a self-guided walking tour as well as the nature trail that’s shared with the National Park Service.

While visiting Hilton Head Island, we always recommend visitors make time to visit Daufuskie Island. A completely unique experience that you won’t soon forget, getting to Daufuskie Island is an activity in itself. Reserve your spot on the ferry, and book your golf cart rental to explore this island that feels like it’s from another time with its long stretches of dirt roads that make it feel as though you’re the only one there. Of course, you’ll need to visit the Daufuskie Island History Museum to get the full story of this incredible island.
