Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

If you’d like to transport yourself to a different world entirely, leave your cares behind and book a trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea. As its name suggests, this seaside town is located in Monterey County on the Central Coast of California. Typically referred to as simply Carmel, this city is an easy drive to Pebble Beach and Monterey, with both the Monterey and Salinas airports close by.

Just under two hours from San Francisco, Carmel-by-the-Sea is a relaxing slice of the coast that lets you take in picturesque views, dine at incredible restaurants, and explore the outdoors at your leisure. Rent bikes, go wine tasting, or take a stroll through the city’s downtown that’ll make you think you’ve walked straight into a storybook.  If you’re looking to pamper yourself, find plenty of spas that let you take a moment to unwind. Take a look at the city’s Mindful-by-the-Sea Guide and Map made in partnership with Mindful magazine.

Williamsburg, Virginia

Often known for being a family-friendly getaway that combines the thrilling rides and entertainment of Busch Gardens and the unique opportunities to discover the past at the country’s largest living history museum, Williamsburg also offers visitors the chance to indulge in some peace and quiet in the beauty of the Virginia Peninsula. It’s hard to beat a lush, green Virginia summer, but if you want a more tranquil trip, try planning your visit in September or late spring.

There are certain activities that you won’t want to miss, like exploring Colonial Williamsburg. Take a tour, or explore the Living History Museum at your own pace. How does a horse-drawn carriage ride around the square sound? There is so much to learn about the region, known as Virginia’s Historic Triangle, and history buffs will love taking in the sights and roaming through museums. As far as recharging at a spa, Williamsburg has fully embraced luxury relaxation and offers multiple spas that are worth the trip alone.

The Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lake region includes eleven lakes sitting just below Lake Ontario. The lakes themselves are all long and narrow and stretch from north to south—hence the name, Finger Lakes. The closest airport is Ithaca, but travelers can choose to fly in through Rochester, Syracuse, or Buffalo. Although we can’t dive deep into each town and lake, we can tell you that the general region is known for beautiful views and plenty of opportunities to get outdoors. It’s also the state’s largest wine producer, so wine connoisseurs will be in heaven.

This region is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise in every season. As vibrant as the summer is, you’ll still be able to enjoy your vacation at a slow pace full of as many (or as few) planned activities as you’d like, ranging from exploring trails to listening to live music with a cold drink in your hand or admiring the beautiful star-lit sky. The Finger Lakes region is a perfect setting to recharge or stay at a serene resort that includes its own spa and relaxing rooms and suites.

Clearwater, Florida

If you’re looking for a little (or a lot) of R&R, Clearwater should be on your must-visit list. Florida’s beaches are known to be gorgeous, but Clearwater’s pristine sand and low-key atmosphere draw visitors looking for a peaceful beach vacation. Similar to Hilton Head Island, this city west of Tampa is great for families looking to get away for the week or weekend and want to focus on the natural beauty of the area.

Enjoy beautiful weather year-round and take in the sights at your own pace. Go for a ferry or private boat ride, or just sit beside the hotel’s pool with a good book. Or, simply stick to beach days. Clearwater is known to have one of the best beaches in the United States. The calm and extremely clear waters are perfect for swimming, but visitors often enjoy snorkeling, parasailing, and more.
