Everyone always gushes about Hilton Head Island\u2019s natural beauty\u2014and we don\u2019t disagree, they have a reason to gush! There\u2019s a very noticeable lack of neon signs, billboards, and really anything that\u2019s designed to stick out, for that matter. Throughout your day, you\u2019ll only see greenery, beautiful beaches, and architectural styles that blend in with the landscape on purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But at night, that\u2019s when the feeling-like-you\u2019re-in-the-middle-of-nowhere bliss sets in.<\/strong> Maybe it\u2019s the main reason the trip was booked!<\/p>\n\n\n\n It takes a while to get used to driving at night, as there are very few street lamps to guide your way and it\u2019s just plain dark.<\/strong> That darkness, though, makes Hilton Head an incredible place to look up. With little light pollution across much of the island, the night sky comes alive, especially in October to celebrate World Space Week<\/strong>. Whether you\u2019re stargazing from the beach or your villa balcony, you\u2019ll get a clear view of constellations shifting with the season and perhaps even catch a glimpse of a planet or two shining bright above the coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here is a list of what to look out for:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n While September may still feel like summer here on Hilton Head Island, the Autumn Equinox officially marks the beginning of astronomical fall in the Northern Hemisphere. This is when the Sun crosses the celestial equator, bringing almost an equal amount of daylight and darkness. And we get to say, “Happy fall, y’all!” <\/p>\n\n\n\n September’s Full Moon is known as the Harvest Moon, named for the time of the year when farmers typically harvest their crops. Something that could happen in October, this year the Harvest Moon will rise on September 26th, with Saturn “nearby” in the night sky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If you’ve ever wanted to see Saturn, October is a great time to look! On October 4th, Saturn will reach opposition, meaning Earth will be positioned directly between Saturn and the Sun. This makes the planet especially bright and visible throughout the night. Grab a good pair of binoculars or find someone with a telescope and you might even be able to spot Saturn’s rings! <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Draconids are set to make their appearance once again this fall, peaking in the late evening of October 8th and into the early hours of the 9th. Those who love keeping an eye on the night sky will know that this meteor shower has a tendency to pop in the evening hours most of all. You may not see a huge number of meteors, but if you’re lucky, you could catch one of these quick-moving shooting stars streaking across the sky! <\/p>\n\n\n\n How lucky are we to have two meteor showers in one month? If the bright moon detered you from seeing any of the Draconid Meteor Shower, you’ll have much more of a chance to see this one, as the shower’s peak aligns with October’s New Moon (meaning there won’t be any moonlight to cover your view). The Orionids are said to have anywhere from 10 to 20 meteors per hour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n October’s Full Moon is known as the Hunter’s Moon, a name traditionally associated with the time of year when hunters prepare for colder months. Head to the beach or another spot on the island with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon and watch the Hunter’s Moon rise over Hilton Head Island! <\/p>\n\n\n\n Get ready for not one, but two Taurid meteor showers this November! The Southern Taurids peak around the 4th and 5th, followed by the Northern Taurids around the 11th and 12th. These showers are known for the occasional bright fireballs, so if you’re spending a clear November night outside, keep an eye out for an especially bright streak shooting across the sky!<\/p>\n\n\n\n This annual meteor shower is expected to peak mid-November in the early morning hours of November 18th. The Leonids are known for their fast-moving meteors, and with the New Moon occurring earlier in the month, darker skies should make this a great opportunity for stargazing! <\/p>\n\n\n\n November’s Full Moon is traditionally known as the Beaver Moon, a name associated with the time of year when beavers are preparing for winter. And this year’s Beaver Moon is also going to be a particularly close one, making it appear slightly larger and brighter than the average Full Moon.
