One shift that’s been catching our eye lately is the growing number of travelers swapping out their big-city trips for small-town getaways, and we don’t see this one fading anytime soon.

Whether you’ve already checked off the iconic landmarks and bucket-list experiences that only major cities can offer, or you’re just seeking out destinations that are filled with charm and have and fewer crowds, we’ve put together the following list of getaway ideas across the country that cover a range of interests, landscapes, and experiences.

Calaveras County, California

Set in California’s Sierra Nevada foothills, Calaveras County is made up of small towns that are rich in history and natural beauty. Often called “Gold Country,” this is where you’ll find the town of Angels Camp as well as nearby Murphys, both welcoming visitors to walk their quaint main streets, visit their tasting rooms and boutiques, and discover the Gold Rush-era charm that makes them so unique. Nearby Calaveras Big Trees State Park is a must-see, always wowing visitors with its giant sequoias and beautiful hiking trails. Highlands, North Carolina

Winter Garden’s historic downtown has brick-lined streets and features tons of locally-owned shops and cafes, making it a relaxed atmosphere that feels worlds away from theme park crowds. Especially enjoyable in the winter and spring months, visitors will love all of the outdoor dining, farmers’ markets, and opportunities to explore the West Orange Trail.

Bonus: If you’re already in the area, plan to stop by nearby Celebration for a stroll around the lake, lunch or dinner downtown, or one of the town’s seasonal events.
