Palmera GO Destination Highlight: Atlanta, GA

Atlanta is one of the South’s fastest-growing cities, where history, innovation, and Southern charm collide. Because the city is home to the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, it serves as a convenient stopover or even a great home base for multi-city travel. Families, couples, solo travelers, and travelers who are seeking out culture, history, and authentic local experiences will all find something to love in Atlanta!

Atlanta is packed with fun for all ages, making it especially appealing to families. From hands-on museums to immersive entertainment and a surprising number of outdoor adventures, the city offers something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re traveling with kids or simply young at heart, you’ll find plenty of ways to explore, learn, and play.

One experience that your group will love–and have probably received recommendations for already–is the Georgia Aquarium. Smack dab in the heart of Downtown Atlanta, you won’t want to miss out on visiting the country’s largest aquarium, which is home to hundreds of species throughout various galleries and features many interactive exhibits and educational shows. From the African Penguins to colorful tropical fish, and of course, to the powerful sharks, you’ll see and learn about the incredible diversity of marine life and the important role these creatures play in our oceans.

Directly across from the aquarium is another well-known stop for visitors to Atlanta: the World of Coca-Cola. This interactive museum and altogether unique experience allows you to step into the brand’s history with a big dose of nostalgia, try popular Coca-Cola beverages from around the world, visit The Vault guarding the secret formula, and meet the iconic Coca-Cola Polar Bear. Don’t leave without grabbing some gear from the merchandise store!

The aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, and the green space between the two make up what’s called Pemberton Place. This urban hub includes a third popular tourist attraction, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Currently closed for renovations but scheduled for a grand reopening in early November of 2025, this is one of the most recommended stops to make and is a powerful and immersive cultural institution that lets you learn more about the Civil Rights Movement and human rights issues around the world.

Across the street from the World of Coca-Cola is the Children’s Museum of Atlanta. Another great stop for families, this hands-on museum is great for children between the ages of two and eight. Permanent and seasonal exhibits allow your kiddos to learn and use their imaginations in a fun and safe environment.

Directly across Baker St NW from Pemberton Place is Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park. What was home to the 1996 Olympic Games is now a beautiful green space filled with walking paths, a children’s playground, water gardens, and, of course, the Fountain of Rings. Stop into the Atlanta Visitor Information Center for additional recommendations of what to do during your visit, attend an outdoor concert at the Southern Company Amphitheater, or even take a ride on nearby SkyView Atlanta, a 20-story ferris wheel with climate-controlled gondolas.

There are two major stadiums in Downtown Atlanta that attract many locals and visitors. The first being the home of the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta United FC, Mercedes-Benz Stadium also hosts college football games and concerts. Nearby State Farm Arena is home to the Atlanta Hawks and is also a well-known venue for concerts and other entertainment, as well as sports events.

Just under a fifteen-minute ride from Downtown Atlanta is Grant Park and Zoo Atlanta. A popular attraction, plan on spending just about three hours to be able to see everything. With more than a thousand animals throughout thoughtfully designed habitats, Zoo Atlanta also features a KidZone, educational and interactive displays, behind-the-scenes experiences, and kid-friendly train and carousel rides.

Also, outside of Downtown, families will love the LEGOLAND Discovery Center. Best for children between the ages of three and ten, this indoor LEGO world features creative activities, interactive exhibits, and gentle rides. Because it’s all indoors, that means that this is a great stop if your family needs a break from the heat or if rain is in the forecast.

While Atlanta is known for its museums and cultural landmarks, it also offers plenty of ways to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Whether you’re looking for wide-open green spaces, family-friendly walking trails, or a scenic spot for a picnic, Atlanta has you covered. The city’s urban parks and innovative redevelopment projects make it easy to balance sightseeing with time in nature.

One of the best examples is the Atlanta BeltLine, a former railway corridor turned walking and biking trail that loops through neighborhoods and connects parks, public art installations, and restaurants. For a more traditional outdoor experience, Piedmont Park in Midtown is a local favorite, perfect for strolling, renting bikes, or letting kids play at the playgrounds. Nature lovers might also enjoy a day trip to Stone Mountain Park, where you can hike to the summit or take a scenic Summit Skyride with stunning views. And if you’re up for something more active, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area offers kayaking, paddleboarding, and hiking trails just outside the city—ideal for a quick escape into nature without leaving metro Atlanta.

Next to Piedmont Park, the Atlanta Botanical Garden is a lush, peaceful escape in the heart of the city. Visitors can stroll through beautifully themed gardens, from the vibrant Orchid Center to the serene Japanese Garden, and walk among the treetops on the Canopy Walk. Seasonal exhibits, larger-than-life plant sculptures, and family-friendly events make this garden a must-see for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to slow down and soak in some beauty.

Atlanta is a year-round destination, but spring and fall are especially popular thanks to mild temperatures, blooming gardens, and a packed calendar of festivals and events. Spring (March–May) brings vibrant color to Piedmont Park and the Botanical Garden, while fall (September–November) offers crisp air, changing leaves, and college football energy throughout the city.

Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, but it’s also prime time for families traveling with kids. Most major attractions are indoors and air-conditioned, and there are plenty of splash pads, shaded parks, and fun seasonal events to enjoy. If you’re planning a visit in winter (December–February), you’ll find lighter crowds, lower hotel rates, and festive holiday events like the Botanical Garden’s Garden Lights, Holiday Nights.

Atlanta is a city of neighborhoods, and where you stay can shape your experience. Downtown is perfect for first-time visitors and families who want to be within walking distance of top attractions like the aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, and Centennial Olympic Park. Midtown offers a mix of green space and culture, with easy access to Piedmont Park, the Botanical Garden, and museums. For upscale shopping, dining, and a more residential feel, Buckhead is a great pick. Travelers looking for a trendier, more local vibe often opt for neighborhoods along the Atlanta BeltLine, known for walkability, cafes, and boutique charm.
