While the island might be the place to be during the summer, taking a trip to Hilton Head Island during the fall season is extremely appealing to many travelers. It’s no secret that the Lowcountry is a great region to visit throughout the year, but we wanted to share a few of our reasons as to why you should spend a little time on Hilton Head this autumn or next.

The weather starts to cool oh-so-gradually, letting you still enjoy your beach time without the heat zapping away all of your energy. You’ll need less after-beach naps and will want to jump right into the next outdoor activity on the agenda. September average highs are in the low-to-mid-80s, eventually dropping to the low-70s in November. You’ll also probably experience less rain, since average rainfall actually dwindles in the fall.

Here’s one for all you Foodies out there: your seafood favorites are in season! Sure, you can find delicious seafood dishes year-round at Hilton Head Island’s tastiest eateries, but the local catch is fresh and at its peak flavor. Lowcountry favorites like oysters and blue crabs are among the most well-known catches of the day, and the locals and visitors alike love to celebrate with festivals and events. Fall on Hilton Head Island welcomes a seemingly endless number of festivals and events that’ll certainly keep your group busy while you’re in town. From food festivals to cultural celebrations, the island’s calendar fills up each year with annual festivals and other traditions that you won’t want to miss. Visitors travel far and wide for many of these events, with the anticipation high for the Island Jam Songwriter Festival, Concours d’Elegance and Motoring Festival, Hilton Head Oyster Festival, and more.

Not only will you be able to attend many concerts at almost all of the festivals and events being held this fall, but you will still be able to find live music at venues and restaurants throughout the island.


Many travel destination’s shoulder seasons (what the fall season on Hilton Head Island is considered to be) are known for having significantly less crowds. In fact, many travelers aim to only travel during these times. Less crowds means more chances to score those seats on whatever cruise, tour, or show you’re wanting to experience. While we still recommend making reservations for these activities and even for dinner while you’re in town, you’ll find it easier to make these plans fit your schedule.

Are you a fan of spooky season? Hilton Head Island has a haunted tale or two, along with fun activities and events for families. Head to a the local haunted spots of Beaufort County to see the locations in person, or book your group on the Ghosts & Gravestones trolley tour to see why nearby, Savannah, Georgia, is often considered the most haunted city in the United States.

The island’s natural beauty comes out in full force during the fall. The island’s iconic green marshes stay that way for quite some time, eventually turning the marshes into a golden-brown color. With less people on the public pathways, beaches, and waterways, you’ll see more wildlife. It’s also a great time for birding on the island!


Fall also means that a new show at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is hitting the stage. Starting at the end of September, catch Something Rotten, a music comedy that’s been called “the funniest musical in at least 400 years!” Find the full theater series schedule and purchase tickets on that Arts Center’s website.
