In this guide, we’ll list three airports that are either on the island itself, or are the closest in proximity to Hilton Head. Each airport offers non-stop flights to cities in the United States, making it easy to find an airline connecting your neck of the woods to your home away from home. We’ll also cover transportation to and from each airport.

Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH)

If you want the most direct way to fly into Hilton Head Island, this is your best bet. Simple but effective, this airport has one commercial terminal building and four gates. Extremely easy to navigate as well as to get to in general, you don’t have to worry about endless loops that are confusing and cause you to drive in circles before getting to where you need to be.

For your time on the island, you can choose to rent a car from many of the well-known rental companies found throughout the country. On-site hours will vary depending on the season, but you’ll have eight companies to choose from such as Hertz, Alamo, Enterprise, and more. If you’re deciding to forgo the rental car and stick to either walking and biking to find your way around the island, there are various taxis and shuttles listed on the airport’s website that’ll make getting to your accommodations quick and easy. The island does have ridesharing services available, but just know that it’s harder to come by than it is in larger cities, so it’s always good to have a backup plan.

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV)

While this airport is an hour’s drive from Hilton Head, it’s still probably the most popular airport that travelers use when visiting the island. There are many reasons for this including the big jump in the number of airlines and nonstop flights offered, which might allow you to find better deals compared to flying into Hilton Head’s airport. And while Savannah’s airport isn’t huge by any means, it’s still a very pretty airport that offers food and shopping options that’ll help you pass the time while you wait for your plane.

Another reason that many people fly into this airport when visiting Hilton Head Island, is simply because of its name. Please note that you’ll have to either rent a car or find a taxi or other rideshare service that’ll take you approximately 35 miles to the island. Sometimes people assume that this airport is closer to the island because of the name, so don’t let that fool you! That being said, don’t let that deter you from flying in and out of this airport, especially if you’d like to spend a day or half a day exploring the charming and historic city of Savannah, GA.

Charleston International Airport (CHS)

Many travelers tend to fly into either the Savannah or Hilton Head Island airports, but for those who either find a great deal or want to explore more of the Lowcountry during their trip, using Charleston’s airport isn’t such a bad idea. Historic Charleston is a must-see if you’ve never visited, so you might at least want to look into either flying into CHS and flying out of either HHH or SAV, or vice versa. That way, you can spend a day or two exploring the area in addition to enjoying your time on Hilton Head.

Since it is a longer distance from the island, we recommend renting a car as rideshare fees would be pretty pricey. You can decide if you only want to rent a car on travel days, or if you’d like to have it during your entire time on Hilton Head Island. If you’re still trying to decide, take a look at our Beach Parking and Transportation Guide.
